Dr. Safiya McCarter is a Naturopathic Doctor, Acupuncturist and the owner of Flourish and Balance Integrative Medicine, based in Rockville, Maryland. Dr. Safiya has over a decade of clinical experience with a focus on pain management (back pain, migraines, knee pain) and reproductive health (fertility, painful periods, menopause, hormone imbalance).

What I believe & How I practice...

My firm belief in the healing power of nature led me to pursue a career in the natural health sciences. Integrating my training as both a Naturopathic doctor and Acupuncturist allows me to effectively treat a wide variety of conditions using safe, evidence-informed natural therapies.
As a clinician I have specialized knowledge and additional training in pain management and reproductive health (fertility, menstrual disorders, hormonal disorders). Additionally, I manage an array of health conditions including chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension using Naturopathic medicine and Acupuncture alone or combined. With proper care and guidance, these concerns can be addressed utilizing natural therapies such as botanical medicine (herbs both Western and Chinese), nutrition and supplementation.
My clinical approach incorporates psychological and emotional health and forming a partnership with my patients. I look forward to working with you on your journey toward optimal health!
Dr. McCarter is a dually licensed Naturopathic Doctor and Acupuncturist and provides specialized, integrative medical care to meet the unique healthcare needs and goals of her patients. Dr. Safiya, as she is called by her patients, grew up in Rochester, NY where the foundations of good health were instilled in her by her parents who made sure that good diet, physical activity and proper rest were firmly rooted and incorporated into the lives of their children. For Dr. Safiya, pursuing a career in natural health sciences feels like a return to her roots and has provided her with the opportunity to study and understand the science behind the care she received, on the rate occasions she became ill, by her mother.

The start of her journey to become a doctor began as a double major in Biology and Mathematics at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia and continued at Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington where she attended naturopathic medical school. After completing a fellowship and personally experiencing the efficacy of acupuncture, Dr. Safiya decided to return to Bastyr to earn her Master's degree in Acupuncture and Chinese medicine. During the course of her studies, she took advantage of the opportunity to complete an externship in China (Chengdu and Shanghai) where she was able to attend classes and shadow doctors, observing firsthand how to seamlessly integrate western medicine with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). While studying in China, Dr. Safiya focused her experience on the treatment of reproductive health concerns (particularly, fertility and menstrual cycle irregularities) and pain management. This focus combined well with the advanced courses and training she received while obtaining her doctorate and is evident in the way that she practices.
